Elizabethton is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethton celebrated its centennial in 2009. The first person to settle in this area was John Witherspoon who arrived in 1811. General David Hunter named it Elizabethton after his wife Elizabeth Beattie. A post office was established at Elizabethton on February 11, 1816, and remained open until May 9, 1865 when it was moved to Knoxville. In 1860s two brothers by the name of Bowen bought property northeast of present-day Elizabethton and started a cotton gin and storage depot there which became known as Bowen's Depot Hospitality Company. They also built a small chapel adjacent to their depot for use by the local Methodist Episcopal Church services. In 1875 they sold all their holdings in Knoxville to George Washington Hardeman who founded the First National Bank ofKnoxville with branches throughout Lamar County and became one of the most powerful men in that county at that time. During World War II much development took place within what is now Elizabethton due to military enlistments and production related businesses such as munitions plants active during that time period such as Sockenheimer Arsenal located just east of town along Highway 66 (now I-24) betweenElizabethtown and Springdale . There were also significant amounts of manufacturing activities taking place across East Tennessee during World War II including aircraft parts production at Drew Air Force Base just southeast of town while other areas produced munitions like armaments plants near Kingston (now Lebanon), Smyrna, Wilsonburg/Fayetteville , Pittston (Now Hickory), Wiseboro (Now Winchester) and many others important locations throughout East Tennessee including Elizabethton

Elizabethton is a small town in Tennessee, located about 25 miles north of Nashville. It was founded in 1853 by General James H. Wilson and his wife, Jane. The town was named after the Elizabeth River, which flows through the town. The first store in Elizabethton was built on the corner of Main and Church Streets. The store operated for a short time before being destroyed by a fire. A new store was built on the same site in 1857 and continued to operate until it burned down in 1865. In 1868, General William Troup made an attack against Confederate forces near Elizabethton and many people were killed or captured. The battle is still remembered as one of the most important engagements of the war. After the war, Elizabethton became a center for cotton production because it had access to good soil and Labor Day week allowed farmers to plant their crops without having to leave their homes for weeks at a time. The post office was established at Elizabethton in 1873 and continued to serve until it closed in 1984. In 1907, Congress passed legislation makingElizabethton an incorporated municipality with its own government under state law rather than within the jurisdiction of Nashville’s city government which had been governing since 1907
