Elizabethton was founded in 1835 by Scots-Irish immigrants from County Tyrone. The first settler was James Laughlin. Elizabethton became a town on December 24, 1835 when General Ford established it as an independent village within Hardin County. On November 12, 1840, the towns of Elizabethton and Spring Hill merged to form one municipality under the name of Elizabethton. In 1865, the name reverted to Elizabethton and it remains its present name today. The settlement that grew up aroundElizabethton began as a small farming community on the banks of the Cumberland River near what is now downtown Nashville. By 1830-40, however, there were over 100 people living in Elizabethtown and surrounding villages including SpringHill and West End (now known as Lenoxville). The early settlers had come from counties in Ireland: Cavan (Fermanagh), Clare (Monaghan), Tipperary (Leitrim), Donegal (Galwayshire), Mayo (Ayrshire) and Antrim (Norman England). Many were Ulster Protestants who had fled sectarian violence back home; others were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians or Methodists who had moved from rural areas to take advantage of new trade opportunities in late eighteenth century America where Presbyterianism ruled as an official religion alongside Anglicanism.
