Elizabethton is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. Elizabethton is located on the Cumberland River and is bordered by Henderson to the north, Chattanooga to the east, Union City to the south, and Maryville to the west. The name of Elizabethton comes from an Englishwoman who founded it in 1796. The first settler in what is now Elizabethton was James Robertson. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from George Rogers Clark in 1811. In 1813, William Hogg bought Robertson's cabin and began building a log cabin himself. From this point forward until after World War II, all of Hardin County's settlements were named for one of their original owners: James Robertson (1811-1893), William Hogg (1792-1871), or Hugh Blair (1768-1848). In 1836, John Ladd moved his family from Lebanon Valley to present-day Elizabethton and set up shop as a wagonmaker. By 1840 he had organized a Methodist church there and also started selling groceries and feed out of his storeroom. In 1841 he married Margaret Witherspoon; they had four children: Anna Folsom Ladd (baptized July 8th 1860), John Ladd Jr., Martha Jane Ladd (baptized December 12th 1862), and James Buchanan Hogg III (March 9th 1865 – May 5th 1948). By 1850 Ladd's store held ten barrels of oil per day--the equivalent of one million gallons today--and he was one of Hardin County's most prosperous citizens. Ladd became known throughout central Tennessee for his production of saddles and horseshoes; he produced more than two hundred thousand pairs between 1830 and 1850 alone! He operated his business side by side with his wife until her death in 1863; then he took over her business entirely while still living with her until his own death in 1893. At ninety years old she still ran their store on Main Street until her death in 1978.
