The Town of Elizabethton was organized on December 12, 1841 by act of the General Assembly with a population of 1,050 residents The Burlington Canal ran through the town until it was abandoned in 1886 and much of its infrastructure has since been destroyed or lost including parts of the original courthouse which still stand today On November 3rd 1861 Union soldiers burned down what is now downtown Elizabethton after Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson near present day Murfreesboro Following this event many Scots-Irish refugees came to live in Elizabethton and started construction on what would become known as "The Armoury" which still stands today adjacent to current day Main Street On October 10th 1865 Confederate General John Bell Hood's army invaded Tennessee and fought their way into Knoxville before retreating back home across Rutherford Bridge into Alabama
