East Ridge, Tennessee is a small town in Blount County, Tennessee. The population was 438 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Hardin County and Pike County. The community began as a logging village in 1881, when two men by the name of East and West settled in the area. TheyLogged until 1902, when they became farmers. In 1923, President Warren G Harding visited East Ridge and ordered all loggers to stop because of the dangers that wood-chipping posed to public health. In 1949, East Ridge was named for General James Hinton Eastridge by order of then Governor John Connally as part of a larger effort to rename communities throughout Tennessee after military veterans or politicians who had made an impact on their state or nation during its formative years. As East Ridge grew more popular due to its proximity to Chattanooga and other major cities, it began experiencing some level of growth until around 2000 when economic conditions changed and jobs disappeared as transportation became more accessible outside of town limits. By 2014 there were only about 10 homes left standing in what was once one of the most vibrant communities in Eastern Tennessee

East Ridge is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1875 by the merger of two small settlements, East and West Ridge. The population was 1,083 at the 2000 census. The first settler in East Ridge was Samuel Pemberton. He and his family lived on a farm that he purchased from John Dickson in 1875. In 1870, Pemberton married Anna Maria Witherington and they moved to what is now known as West Ridge. They had three children: Samuel Pemberton Jr., Anna Maria (born 1872), and Willie Woodrow Pemberton (1874-1957). In 1880, the Witherington family moved to what is now known as East Ridge when their land became available there after Josephine Jarratt sold her land at the junction of Eastern State Road and Knoxville Pike to the East Tennessee Coal & Iron Company for $1 million. The company built a mill here which produced coal until it closed in 1929. A school was built on this site in 1865 by Methodist Episcopal Church missionaries under instruction of Reverend James Auldridge. It served grades one through twelve before being discontinued because of lack of students in 1895. A new school building was constructed onsite in 1897 using funds donated by Nathan Barker Sr.. The old school building serves as community center today. The first post office opened at East Ridge on November 8, 1887 with David Ladd serving as postmaster. In 1912, Postmaster General Dwight Eisenhower sent mail from East Ridge via truck through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky due to high postage rates then prevailing at that time! In 1915 Walter Hines delivered milk to local homes for eight days during World War I while supplies were limited within Tennessee due to mandatory military service restrictions placed upon citizens by Congress at that time. This event helped make East Ridge an early leader among American towns concerned about war production shortages outside of Great Britain/France/Germany etcetera etcetera!
