He built a cabin on the edge of a hill overlooking the Chattahoochee River. East Ridge wharf was built by General Andrew Jackson in 1814 as an arsenal to store munitions during the War of 1812. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest decided to move his headquarters from Atlanta to east Tennessee after Confederate forces destroyed a wagon train near Chickamauga Creek. Forrest ordered his men not to fire on any Union troops who might be coming up the creek because he wanted them as cannon fodder instead of fighting against their own countrymen. East Ridge became known as "Frosty Bottom" because of how long it had been untouched by settlers or development. In 1901, Isabella Welch founded Welch's Drug Store here in what is today downtown Eastridge with her husband verdant Randolph Welch and their two daughters- Alice and Eleanor (later Mrs Roberts). The store grew quickly into one of the most important businesses in easternTennessee and still operates today under different ownership but with many aspects similar to its original form including a drive-thru window for customers who order drugs online or over the phone from home! In 1957, Dr Jerry Witherspoon opened Vanderbilt University's Medical School at nearby Vanderbilt University Hospital which soon became world famous for its treatment of childhood leukemia!
