East Ridge, Tennessee is located in the Appalachian Mountains of southeastern Tennessee. The town was founded in 1818 by Captain John East and his family. It became a city in 1907 and is now a member of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. At 4,047 feet (1,200 meters) elevation, East Ridge is one of the highest settlements in southeast Tennessee. The region that includes present-day East Ridge was first settled during the late 19th century by settlers from Kentucky and Virginia. They built log homes and cleared land for farming. By 1870, however, most of these pioneers had moved away to create new communities farther west in what is now Alabama and Mississippi. In 1818,Captain John East and his family decided to move to this area after hearing about land available for settlement near Knoxville. They arrived at what is now East Ridge with their three children – George Washington (1797-1868), Martha Ann (1799-1875),and John Quincy Adams (1798-1865). After arriving, the Eastidges erected a cabin on top of an old mountain called Pigeon Hill so they could get used to life up high. They also started a small business trading goods with nearby settlers. Despite being situated remote from any major city or commercial center,East Ridge quickly developed into a thriving community thanks to its good roads and access to resources such as timber and water supplies. In addition to its natural assets such as beautiful valleysides and rolling hills, East Ridge also attracted numerous entrepreneurs who set up businesses providing services such as transportation or agricultural production: laundry establishments; grocery stores; churches; schools; coal mines; milling operations; saddlery shops; breweries; distilleries; etc.). East Ridge is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first settlers in East Ridge were two families from Scotland who arrived in 1810. They named their community after the ridge that separates Loudon County from Hardin County. The name may have come from an incident where several men went out for a walk and came across a mountain with high ridges running along it. One man thought the ridges looked like those on his country estate in Scotland, and he called his settlement "East Ridge." The first school teacher in East Ridge was Mrs. Jane Livingston who taught at Second Presbyterian Church until 1827 when she moved to nearby Lebanon to be closer to her family. In 1828, Eastridge had its own post office which opened under the name "Hardingburg". In 1832, John Sutherlin started farming land near present-day East Ridge and began selling produce to local residents and businesses. By 1840, he had built a house on what is now Main Street and begun marketing his produce to other towns throughout Hardin County. In 1850, Sutherlin's son-in-law James Hardscrabble bought some of Sutherlin's land and began growing cotton opposite present day West Elementary School (now known as Hardscrabble Middle School). In 1861, Hardscrabble donated land east of Main Street for a new courthouse which became Eastridge's first schoolhouse; this building served as the town library until 1909 when it burned down. During World War II, many people in East Ridge worked on 20th century munitions plants located around Knoxville or Portsmouth outside of town limits; however most residents avoided military service because they did not believe war would bring wealth and status within their community unlike during World War I when many people lost their homes due to fighting in Europe . After 1945 most citizens returned back into their hometowns except for a few soldiers who continued living inside Knoxville while all others relocated back into eastern Tennessee . In 1957 Eastern Kentucky University opened up shop next door at what is now UTEP main campus property; this move increased commerce within the area as students began commuting betweenKnoxville/Portsmouth and Lexington/Wadsworth AFB . Today much of downtown has been replaced by housing developments with little retail presence save for one grocery store that reopened after being closed for years during economic downturns northeast of town off US Highway 69 near Interstate 24/State Route 6 exit 221A - typically busy during lunchtime only
