East Ridge was founded in 1819 by Alexander Robertson and his wife, Sarah Logan Robertson. The town was named for ridge along the Chattahoochee River which ran through it. The first post office in East Ridge was established on October 26, 1825. The name of the post office changed to East Ridge on December 2, 1828 after being moved from nearby Lookout Mountain to its current site. On July 8, 1881, Eastridge incorporated as a village under the name of "East Ridge". On April 15, 1907, during World War I (1914-18), East Ridge became one of three towns in Knox County that sided with America's war effort against Great Britain. On November 10 of that year – two days before America's entry into World War I – the citizens of both Lookout Mountain and East Ridge voted to secede from Knox County and form their own county called Hardeman County under Governor David Dennison. The population of East Ridge increased rapidly following World War II as soldiers stationed there came home to find new opportunities for work and education within their newly formed county government and community. After years of growth and development however, commercial development eventually outstripped residential growth throughout much of the late 20th century and by 2000 had dwindled to only a handful small businesses scattered among several hundred residents within an unincorporated area east of Chattanooga known as "East Valley." In response to this situation some residents have petitioned for annexation into Chattanooga proper since 2001 while others have chosen to fight for continued autonomy within what has been traditionally considered their historical home.
