In 1875, Targetters Auctions Incorporated was founded by Wm Haggerty and his son John Haggerty Sr.. This company became one of the leading target companies in America until it went bankrupt in 1923.
East Ridge, Tennessee is a small town located in Johnson County, Tennessee. The population was 987 at the 2010 census. East Ridge is one of the few remaining towns in Johnson County that were founded before the area became part of the United States. The town was originally called "Saltville" and was established in 1838 by General James Wilkinson. It was renamed "East Ridge" after being moved from its original location on the Cumberland River to what is now Johnson County. In 1881, East Ridge had a total population of 521 people and it remained an agricultural community until around 1930 when there were also no more mills in the area. East Ridge was named for the ridge that runs along its northern border. The community has been around since at least 1892 and was originally called "Vernon." The name change came about because an early settler found a vein of coal there and changed his name to Vernon in order to get away from miners who were trying to tip him off about what he was finding.
East Ridge was a plantation in the heart of Tennessee. The first white people to live on the peninsula were the Robertson family, who started farming in 1795. In 1819, East Ridge was acquired by Colonel John Sevier, who moved his family and their slaves upriver to what is now known as West Ridge. The Seviers ran a small farm until 1828, when they sold off all their land and bought some of the best land around Knoxville. They built a large home on West Ridge that still stands today. Over time, other families grew up on East Ridge and it became one of the most important plantations in Tennessee. In 1861, after Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched through Knoxville with an army full of black soldiers, many residents came out to support him. This caused many businesses to close down and many people lost their jobs. In 1865, East Ridge was sacked by Union forces during the Battle of Missionary Hill and most of its inhabitants were killed or captured. However, some managed to escape back upstream and re-establish themselves on West Ridge where they continued to operate a large farm until 1953.
