East Ridge is a small town in Lenoir County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,100 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as East Ridge was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 1800s. They built log homes and farms around what is now the townsquare. In 1876, East Ridge High School opened after years of planning and construction by its founders, including local minister Wm. J. Fenton Sr., who also founded Iuka Baptist Church in nearby Iuka. In 1924, East Ridge became a borough when it merged with neighboring Knoxville to formKnoxville City.[1] In 1932 it became an incorporated village,[2] and in 1968 it was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1863-1939), one of America's most famous white supremacists and leader of the Ku Klux Klan during the late 19th century. During World War II, East Ridge served as a military airfield used by both American and Japanese bombers during Operation Downfall which destroyed major parts of Japan; however, few residents remain from that time period because they left for internment or relocation after Pearl Harbor.[3][4] The post-World War II growth of Knoxville led to increased development withinEast ridge borders - businesses moved into new buildings just east of Main Street while other streets were renamed following industrial growth such as Carthage Road (now Peachtree Street) becoming North Avenue; this allowed more people access to shopping areas downtown while leaving east side streets largely undeveloped until more recent times when business has redeveloped there again (most notably along North Avenue near Park Row Elementary School). There has been occasional redevelopment over time though mostly single family housing on large lots dating back to before WWII when many residents chose not to move away from their homes following VE Day feeling that they would have no choice but to return given all the new development being done in town despite predictions that things would change little due residential values had not grown significantly since then .................Today's community began developing rapidly some 25 years ago when Knoxvillians voted overwhelmingly against annexation into Chattanooga – deciding instead to keep their vibrant smalltown feel together
