East Ridge is one of the oldest towns in Hardin County and has been around since 1829. East Ridge was once a part of the Cherokee Nation and is now an incorporated municipality. The first settler in East Ridge was John Beattie, who arrived in 1829. He founded what is now known as Beattie's Corners on the edge of present day East Ridge. In 1830, James Cagle settled near the present day intersection of State Route 147 and Ulysses Road. In 1831, David Kirkland founded Kirkland's Mills on the east side of present day Main Street in what is now called Middleton Township. In 1837, John Sutherlin established Sutherlin's Mill on what is now State Route 224 just south ofpresent-dayEastridge Cemetery. By 1840, there were 8 settlements in Hardin County with a total population of 153 people:Beattie's Corners (1829), Kirkland's Mills (1831), Sutherlin's Mill (1840), Middleton Township (1837), Addison Township (1839), Allendale Township (1841), and Porterville Township (1842). In 1845, Jasper Wirtz settled on land northwest of present day Eastridge Cemetery which he later named Wirtzvilla after himself and his wife Anna Maria Wirtz. In 1865, George McFarlane settled northeast ofpresent-dayEastridge Cemetery on land that he later named McFarlanestown after himself and his wife Sarah Ann McFarlane. McFarlanderstown became an incorporated municipality in 1903 under name "East Ridge". He also homesteaded section 6 off US Highway 421 northwest of present-day Westside Elementary School before it became part of today’s town limits
