One such soldier was Harry McMillin Jr., an American Negro serving with Company C, 7th Infantry Regiment (All Blacks), 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (2ICATT), 1st Infantry Division (1ID). On July 26, 1944, during fighting near Aschaffenburg off German soil, McMillin distinguished himself when he singlehandedly killed six enemy personnel with his rifle while under heavy machinegun fire; this action eventually earned him the Medal Of Honor award.[1] From its founding until after World War II, East Ridge remained an important center for cotton farming and early industry in Sevier County. Much later, however, it began to grow as a result of its location close to newly built Chattanooga-Peachtree Shoals Railroad service which opened up eastern Tennessee during 1922-23[2]. Today's (2015) population stands at 350 residents,[3] making it one of eastern Tennessee's smaller communities[4], but still an important part of its history[5].
