In 1819, Knox County was created as a separate state within Kentucky and East Ridge became part of that state. In 1842, Eastern Tennesse became known as the Union State of Tennessee when it seceded from Kentucky. At that time, it included much of what is now eastern Tennessee including East Ridge. During World War II (1939-1945), East Ridge served as an important base for troops fighting in both World War I (1899-1914) and World War II (1939-1945). Several military installations were built here including Camp Butler where troops trained before heading off to war; Fort Donelson where General Ulysses S Grant fought his famous battle against Sherman; Camp Bearden which manufactured tanks during World War II; and Big Spring Air Force Base which housed bombers during the Korean War. East Ridge is a census-designated place in Coffee County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,634 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area.
