The first firearms in East Ridge were pistols and rifles made by the local blacksmiths. These early firearms were designed to shoot small rounds such as shot putts or arrows. It was not until 1828 that a gun barrel was invented in East Ridge, Tennessee. This new barrel consisted of a tube of wrought iron bored out to a specific diameter and then covered with cloth or leather. The firearm used this new barrel, called an "East Ridge Rifle." The weapon became very popular in the late 1800s because it could be fired quickly and easily from horseback. It also allowed soldiers on campaign to reach their destinations much faster than if they had to walk or ride into town. In addition, these guns were very inaccurate when fired from a long distance away, so they were mostly used for target practice or for hunting small game. However, the popularity of these guns eventually faded due to over-hunting and lack of improvement in technology during the mid-19th century. However, some historians believe that the rifle may have been resurrected in 1917 when World War I intervened in Western Europe and caused an increase in demand for Firearms among American soldiers stationed there. Consequently, East Ridge Rifle still remains one of the most popular handguns today because it is easy to use and accurate at short distances

In 1903, East Ridge merged into Knox County so it became part of that county's government structure (it had been split off from Knox County in 1871). During World War II, East Ridge served as an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location on I-15 just outside of Chattanooga metropolitan area between Lookout Mountain and Lenoir Hills (the mountain range running along both sides of I-15)

The original location of East Ridge was on the east bank of the Cumberland River. A post office called East Ridge was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1911. In 1868, developers built a lumber camp on what is now East Ridge Road. The town became known as "The Village". In 1888, tobacco growers organized a cooperative to grow tobacco for local commerce. In 1896, East Ridge prohibited prohibitionism and joined the National Prohibition Party. In 1924, Eastern Railroad opened its line from Chattanooga to Shelbyville through East Ridge; this helped spur development along what is now Route 22/24B (the former alignment of US 220). The community prospered thanks to agriculture and industry until World War II when large-scale military production closed down easternTennessee businesses and small towns alike due to rationing of materiel during World War II. 1% of all manufacturing jobs were lost in East Ridge during that time period while 5% or so of all jobs were lost statewide; however only 1% or so percent Of total employment income went into support services such as libraries and museums which are essential for any community's economy
