It is part of the Memphis–St. Louis metropolitan area. Founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1853 as East Ridge, East Ridge quickly became known for its fertile soil and deep wells that provided drinking water to the community for over a century. The community's primary industry until the early 1960s was agriculture; however, today most residents are retirees or work in nearby Memphis or St. Louis. The first post office in East Ridge was established in 1854 and served until 1907. The first school was built in 1865 and served grades one through twelve until it closed in 1969; however, a new school building has been constructed on West Main Street since 2003 and serves grades PreKindergarten through fifth grade currently. In 1955, Donny Schulz became the first person to be born at East Ridge Hospital after being born prematurely at 24 weeks gestation into an unwed mother who had traveled from Illinois to deliver him there. In 1986, Drs., William Pugh & James Ahern opened the world's first pediatric surgery center within mile of East ridge when they performed quadruple bypass surgery on then 8 year old Billy Bob Thornton during his rehabilitation following a car accident which destroyed his right arm just above the elbow bones! Today Eastridge Hospital continues to serve as one of Tennessee's top medical facilities with more than 1200 beds!-- All this while keeping our heartwarming traditions such as "freezing eggs" every winter for all of our patients who drop by.--Eastridge natives know that our hospital offers quality care without charge!

The first Europeans to visit East Ridge were Baptist missionaries from South Carolina in 1814. In 1827, General James K. Polk and his army invaded Tennessee and captured Knoxville without battle or fight. The town was renamed for General Polk after his victory at Battle of Knob Hill on October 9, 1827. East Ridge became a community because it was near enough to Chattanooga to be reached by wagon train transportation and because there was an abundance of cottonwood trees that could be used for Log Cabin construction purposes. The first post office in East Ridge was established in 1834 and remained open until it closed in 1907. In 1865, East ridge had two churches-Methodist and Baptist-and one schoolhouse which served gradeschool up to 12th grade; however, the school closed by 1870 due to lack of students and funds$. East Ridge experienced some major events during its history such as when the military burned down Union POW barracks on July 6th 1863 during the Civil War; when the Cherokee Nation displacement began on November 25th 1906 following their forced removal from Georgia's eastern territory pursuant to Treaty of Donelson; when Oak Mountain Dam failed on April 24th 1924 leading to a flowagegate disaster that destroyed more than 2/3 of acres across both banks of the river below Oak Mountain Dam; when Eastern Electric Company merged into GEICO Corporation on December 15th 1970 creating one single company with over $100 billion in assets worldwide including land holdings all aroundthe world totaling over 253 million acres (138 million hectares) - quite an accomplishment given that east ridge had no creek running through it! Furthermore, Hurricane Floyd made landfall along Highway 40 just west of East Ridge residents on September 11th 1999 resulting in extensive damage before finally ending days later southwest near Bristol Bay Missouri Today much has changed since those times with many residents working outside the home country instead enjoying life within our great country while others are still fighting various wars fought overseas or simply living modest lives inside our walls!
