The town was first called "Butler" because it was one of the original counties in Tennessee. When East Ridge became a community, its citizens decided to change their name because it sounded more like Memphis and Nashville than "Butler." The town's first post office opened in 1893. In 1907, the Eastern Railroad built a railroad station in the town. This made it easier for people to get to work and make money. In 1960, East Ridge High School was established as an all-girls school. It has been attended by girls since its inception and currently serves over 1,000 students from grades PreK-12th grade. In 1990, Westside Elementary School also opened as an all-girl school serving grades K-5th grade only until 2006 when they merged with East Ridge High School In addition to its schools, east ridge has two churches which are First Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church

East Ridge, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 1,909 at the 2010 census. East Ridge is located on the Cumberland River. It is northeast of Nashville and northwest of Chattanooga. The first settler in East Ridge was J.H. Hays who arrived in 1827. Hays built a cabin near present-day Highland Avenue and Indian Road. He also operated a ferry across the river to get goods to his customers in Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1837, James Robertson built the first sawmill on the banks of the river in what is now East Ridge Elementary School lot #1A (now part of Harding Middle School). The mill produced lumber for local homes and businesses until it was closed by management in 1922 due to financial difficulties. The first school in East Ridge was opened as an academy on February 17, 1838, by Elder John Coker with six students fromresponse from surrounding townsite residents led by Drury Fenton(a Presbyterian pastor). In 1840, a Methodist church was built on what is now Parkwood Drive adjacent to Central High School (now part of Vanderbilt University). In 1843, Baptist minister Simeon Baldwin began preaching services at what is now First Baptist Church which became known as Baldwin's Chapel after him. In 1861 when East Ridge incorporated as a town it had just 12 residents; it grew rapidly with new settlers arriving until 1870 when its population reached 1008 people!
East Ridge is a census-designated place in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census.
