East Ridge is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. East Ridge was first settled in 1809 by families from eastern Kentucky and early Tennessee. It became a village in 1819 and a town in 1829. The original courthouse was built near what is now the east edge of town. The community grew around two railroad lines: the Memphis and Chattanooga Railroad (M&C) and the Nashville and Chattanooga Railway (NBC). Both companies were founded by businessmen from Memphis to increase access to resources such as coal, timber, water supplies, and other goods that would have been difficult or impossible to obtain otherwise. Coal mining started on prominent hills near downtown East Ridge in1870; initial operations produced about 2 million tons of coal each year until 1914 when production collapsed due to competition from new mines opened west of Chattanooga. In 1917 Eastern Tennessee merged with McDonough County, Georgia to formKnox County.[1] During World War II, East Ridge served as a military airfield serving primarily bomber operations over central Tennessee with RAF Bomber Command RAF Station Middleton Hill/East Ridge being one of four primary airfields used during the war[2]. Today only an aerial perspective can be seen through windows inside old compressor stations still standing today off I-25 just outside town limits which are now home to several restaurants including Mr T's BBQ restaurant
