East Ridge, Tennessee is a small town in the mountainous region of East Tennessee. The population was 751 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of the Cumberland Mountains and is bordered by Marshall County to the north, Sevier County to the east, Knox County to the south, and imminent Robertson County to the west. The town began as a farming community in 1872. In 1884 it became a post office and remained so until 1907. When trustees were created for each township in 1907, East Ridge was placed within Marshall Township. The first postmaster was Mrs. Anna Hinson Acheson who served from 1884-1887. In 1955, East Ridge was merged with nearby Knott City into one municipality which still maintains its own government today. The original name of East Ridge was Greeneville but this name change came about because residents had difficulty finding an appropriate word for their community after growing tired of being called "East" when other towns in that area had similar names (e.g., West Bluff). Today, East Ridge remains a small town with many unique features including its two churches – First Baptist Church & Second Presbyterian Church – as well as its active retail district which includes several grocery stores, hardware stores, and lumberyards along with several restaurants and cafes serving local cuisine such as Appalachian Mountain Lodge’s popular dishes made from venison or chicken broth simmering over open fireplaces during winter months; Pisgah Brewing Company offers craft beers brewed on site; and also Ten Mile Creek State Park has miles of hiking trails perfect for those looking for an easy day hike or more challenging loops that take them through woodlands full of deer sightings or past waterfalls ideal for swimming or fishing depending on season
