Dyersburg, Tennessee is home to the world's second largest red dot sight, located on Red Mountain. The 1,000-acre site was donated to the city in 1984 by George W. Dyer and his wife, Bernadette C. Dyer. Red Dot Sight also operates a number of other gun sights in the area, including one located at White Sands State Park. The Dyersburg Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1881. The club first met at the home of W.J. McGeehan. In 1904, the club moved to a location on Main Street. In 1916, the club purchased a rifle range adjacent to the old Mayfield Armory building on State Street. The range was used until 1949 when it was sold to the Tri-Cities Rifle and Pistol Association which operates it today.
Dyersburg, Tennessee is a small town located in Sevier County, Tennessee. The population was 5,905 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sevier County. Dyersburg is located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and includes parts of the Appalachian Mountains. The city was founded in 1881 by John Neely Bryan and named for him, David S. Dyer. In 1907, it became a city and was renamed to honor General Joseph Eppes (1817-1905). The original downtown area of Dyersburg consisted of just a few blocks of Main Street and two blocks of Fourth Avenue. Today, much of downtown has been replaced by high-rise buildings and other structures built during the city's rapid growth over the past few decades. A number of important historical sites are located within or near downtown Dyersburg including the First Baptist Church which served as the town's inaugural meeting place on November 20, 1881; State Capitol Building where state government first convened; War Memorial Cemetery; Masonic Lodge No. 2 where many Confederate veterans were buried; United States Post Office building constructed in 1903 upon recommendation from then PostmasterGeneral James Mclntyre; and Lamar Hospital which opened on December 1st, 1923 as one of six hospitals established in Tennessee during World War II under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program. Since its establishment as an incorporated town in 1881, Dyersburg has seen great change both physically and economically - from being a small agricultural community with only a handful of homes to becoming one of Sevier County's most populous cities with over 5,900 residents today! Over time, commercial development has occurred throughout Downtown while residential areas have experienced significant development such as new subdivisions being erected along Third Avenue South between Main Street and Second Street as well as additional tracts added eastward along Third Avenue North beyond Fourth Avenue South to form what is now known colloquially as "Downtown."
