Dyersburg is a small town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Dyersburg is located on the Cumberland River and has a total area of 26 square miles (70 km²). The first settlers in what would become Dyersburg were 3 brothers who came over from Kentucky in 1811. John, James, and Andrew Dixon all died in 1812 during the War of 1812 and their brother David took over their farmstead and named it Dixon's Station after them. The first settler to live permanently in what would become Dyersburg was Isaac Hunt who arrived around 1820. Isaac had 2 sons, Jesse and GeorgeHunt who both moved to Dyerbergsville around 1840-1850. In 1860-1861 there were 10 people living in Dixon's Station including 6 men, 4 women, 2 children under 5 years old, and 1 dog/cat. In 1870 Captain Jno Fenton led an expedition downriver to purchase land from the Cherokees for $10 per acre (2 hectares = 50 cm²). ThisPurchase set off a series of purchases by various white men throughout Marshall County that would result in 1/3 of present day Dyersburg being developed as agricultural land between 1870-1920: Agrarian Land Company - bought 7% of all acres purchased; Gentry & Hunt - bought 53% of all acres purchased; McCormick Manufacturing Company - bought 60% of all acres purchased; Pritchett Iron Works - bought 90% of all acres purchased; Wartime Reconstruction Administration - leased 8 tracts totaling 248 acres (about 12 km²) from the US Army for military use as an airfield during World War II As more people moved into this rural region during the late 1800s they began growing tobacco plantations which soon gave way to cotton plantations after 1915 when Henry Steele became Administrator for District No. 9 (). By 1920 there were over 180 landowners with some 465 slaves working on 13 different cotton plantations accounting for 98%of production statewide The post-war period saw westerning changes beginning with prohibitionism which caused many Appalachian farmers to move away from agriculture towards industry until local governments could provide infrastructure needed such as schools and grocery stores . Cotton prices soared during this time making it difficult for many farmers to remain viable even as profits plummeted causing many families to lose their homes within five years . This process accelerated when global demand increased following World War II while labor costs decreased creating new opportunities for those still able to operate profitable farms Today much like before there are subsistence farmers as well as larger commercial operations but also many smaller family operated businesses providing quality goods at affordable prices
