Dyersburg is located at 36°27′N – 86°13′W (36.9072 degrees north latitude, 86.1964 degrees west longitude). It has a total population of 68,895 as of 2017. The history of Dyersburg began with early settler James Witherspoon who arrived in what is now Dyersburg on July 1st, 1824 with his brother David Witherspoon and their families. James started homesteading on land that he purchased near present-day downtown Dyerberghegan on August 2nd, 1830 from Nicholas Garland “Gar” Henderson aka Nicholas Garvey II.. James died October 3rd 1830 at the age of 54 years old while out hunting with his brother David on land grant #1 which included Edgewood Township south of present day Gadsden County line east to Blountsville Road about 10 Miles due South of Knoxville one mile due West along that road bound together by Boone Creek where they met hunters Hunting Elk across that creek bed about two miles due East then continuing along Duck Creek until they got very close to some big trees & thick bushes covered over logs made into cabins called White Oak Lodge or Goodloe’s Cabin Site dating back to 1774 according to pioneer John Covington Inmate log book At this point you are exactly within present day downtown Muhlenberg County TN location boundaries between Knoxville/Gadsden County line east and west as well as east and southeast corner bounded by Duck Creek thence Northsouthwest to edge or boundary of Cumberland County Line then turning right (North) easterly along said county line edge then turning left (West) westerly past said Cumberland County Line boundary so as not too far inside said limits shown herewith your position is exact within limits shown geographically just beyond those mentioned above thus making this place HOME OF JAMES WitherSPON FOUNDER OF THE FIRST HOUSE IN THAT LOCATION ABOVE AS PRESENT DAY ON RIVERDALE ROAD
