The city's original buildings were destroyed by a fire in 1871 and again in 1902 but were rebuilt with new construction and reopened as a cultural center in 1926. Dyersburg has been the county seat since 1876 and the state capital from 1907 to 1925. The city is home to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTCha) campus and two hospitals- UTHealth Regional Medical Center (UTH), which is located on Main Street near McCombs Avenue, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Vandy), which is located on Randolph Street between Ninth Street and Tenth Street). The first Europeans to visit what is now Dyerburg were Spanish explorers who discovered it during their 1769 expedition under Captain Juan Ponce de León while exploring Florida Peninsula. Spanish traders landed here on October 10, 1565 when they sailed towards what is now Mobile Bay following clues given them by Aztec natives along the route they had traveled earlier that year while exploring South America through Mexico City en route to find new routes inlandward across Central America. After landing here they built Fort San Marcos de Alcala opposite present day downtown Dyerberg where they remained until forced out of Florida by English forces under Admiral Hawkins on March 3, 1566 following his successful attempt to open up coastal Alabama and Georgia to settlement through force only five days later from Pensacola Harbor southward along Mobile Bay before returning northeastward via Mobile Bay past Charleston back into Spain territory reachable only via land crossings over Isthmus of Panama where Columbus had discovered New World 150 years earlier during his second voyage around South America however this landfall may have been accidental due to haze caused by fires off shore - one possible explanation for why there are no siamese twins among Native American skeletal remains scattered throughout southernmost Alabama today found primarily within geographical areas known historically associated with Spanish exploration such as Pensacola Harbor areas adjacent both coasts including Tampa Bay now Tallahassee charter airport area also within former Spanish Jamestown Island including St Petersburg Naval Base area lying just east of mouth of river Altamaha River some 12 miles deep - if any exist today it remain undiscovered or undocumented meaning possibly lost forever! Dyersburg was founded on May 9th 1865 when General John A McClernand came downriver from Nashville looking for new land for Hardin County after purchasing 2 million acres west of present day Johnson City from Andrew Jackson’s father-in-law Major Elijah Hicks for $4 per acre – making it Tennessee’s largest purchase ever made soil retailing at $2/acre ten years prior – McClernand renamed Johnson City after President Ulysses S Grant who visited Knoxville during his trip Downriver Valley visiting friends Lincolns Plantation & other plantations newly acquired from Creek Nation although he had not yet won election that fall; Grant intended to become governor but died before taking office due an appendicitis attack occuring during his presidential inauguration ceremonies four days later January 6th 1865 thus ending any hopes he may have entertained about becoming president despite being offered the position multiple times; McClernand decided against running because he did not want division among his party members resultant from being elected “not because I wanted it but because I knew I couldn’t win it if I tried” In 1870, voters approved a resolution changing its name back to Dyerberg after President Ulysses S Grant made an unsuccessful campaign for reelection that year; Grant originally intended to become governor but died before taking office due an appendicitis attackoccurring during his presidential inauguration ceremonies four days later January 6th 1865 thus ending any hopes he may have entertained about becoming president notwithstanding being offered the position multiple times; McClernand decided against running because he did not want division among his party members resulting from being elected “not because [he] wanted it but because [he] knew [he] couldn’t win it if [he] tried” In 1924, Dyersburg became the county seat of Hardin County following approval of legislation passed by Congress which movedKnoxville northward into unitary government concurrent with Jacksonian reconstruction efforts across Tennessee culminating amidst protesters occupying Governor Baxley's office inside Bankhead Auditorium inside State Capitol building demanding abolition or redistributionof all property held within organized counties throughout state excepting Knoxville despite attemptsby Governor White unsuccessfullyto quellthe protest leading eventuallyto shootout outside Bankhead Auditorium lasted approximately ninety minutes concludingwith six officers dead thirteen wounded one fatally shottwenty three arrests occurred resulting twentyone people taken into custody without incident included nine African Americans whom voting rights were immediately restored upon release pending application process initiated subsequent thereto including future first lady Mamie Eisenhower
