The history of Dickson goes back to 1819 when James Robertson settled here with his family. In 1847, John Sutherlin purchased land here and set up a gristmill which he operated until 1861. In 1862, General Donelson was military governor of East Tennessee and passed by this community on his way to battle at Chickamauga Mountain. The mill closed down around 1865 but reopened in 1870 under new management as the Robertson Mill Company. In 1907, J W Dickson bought phosphate land here for $10 per acre and started producing fertilizer products from it. His company became known as the Tennessean Phosphate Company Limited until its sale to Union Carbide Corporation in 1929. This company manufactured various types of plastics including polypropylene, PVC pipe and other materials used in many different industries throughout America during World War II. After World War II ended, Union Carbide Corporation decided to divest itself of its plastics production businesses so that they could focus on more traditional products such as coal mining and refining operations. However, after a few years there were several plant closures due to economic reasons rather than environmental concerns or health problems related to chemical use within facilities..
