Morgan appointed Dickson as an official agent for the purchase of land in nearby Chattanooga for the construction of what would become Morgan State University. Alexander Dickson was born in 1798 in Skaneateleshire, Scotland to parents who were farmers and had emigrated to America several years earlier. He came to America at age 20 with his family and began working on his father's farm near Lebanon Mills before moving to Tennessee in 1819 to begin his own business career. By 1830 he had built up a large cotton plantation near present-day Echota along the Cumberland River. After purchasing additional land near Knoxville two years later, he donated it all to establish Knoxville as an independent city with freeholders privileges similar to those enjoyed by neighboring Nashville The first major development at Dickson occurred during the early 1800s when Alexander Dickson bought some 640 acres (240 hectares) of land on which he erected a cotton plantation that produced over seventy-five thousand pounds (30 thousand kilograms) of raw cotton per year from 1818-1820 alone In addition to their farming activities,the Dicksons also operated four stores: one located on Monument Street between Broad Ripple Road and First Avenue; one off Prospect Street just east of downtown; another off McCullough Street between Second Avenue and Broadway; and finally one at Elmira Place southeast of today's University Park Plaza Shopping Center Their enterprises generated income that supported both their parents' subsistence requirements as well as their own continued education through college tuition . Furthermore they were able to provide opportunities for their children through apprenticeship into trades or professional endeavors . For example young Alexander earned his initial trade training from his father while still living on our farm where he was also apprenticed into agricultural work In 1840 Alexander purchased 2200 acres (900 hectares) within McCormick County north-west of Knoxville which became known as "The Cotton Field". Thereafter he developed it into what is now known as "Dickson Farms" - consisting primarily of corn/ wheat fields – yielding an annual crop amountingto more than twenty million bushels (over 100 metric tons). With this success came increased pressure upon him financially due principally TO rising costs associated with production expenses such As late nineteenth century American culture changed forever following James Kenedy s Purchase decision whereby slaveowners could sell their slaves free instead Of investing them back INTO production & labor costs thereby freeing them up To travel & work outside slavery etc., prices for primary crops like cotton skyrocketed Thus putting further strains upon Alex de Dickenson's finances & making it increasingly difficult For small farmers like himself who couldn't immediately afford high prices thanks mainly TO decreases & restrictions wrought by Kenedy decision What followed was A period Of Unrestrained Development called The Gilded Age Which ultimately led To Our current day Economic Struggles In America .)
Dickson is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,675 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The community was platted on November 15, 1868 by John Dickson and his wife Martha. The name derives from an early settler named David Dickson. Located near the present-day town of Clarksville on the Cumberland River, it became a business center for farmers in the late 19th century because of its location and access to water resources. In 1902, Dickson post office was renamed Clarksville after General Ulysses S. Grant's home state of Kentucky. In 1907, Dickson had its first schoolhouse built and opened to students grades one through twelve. In 1912, the post office name changed again to Dickson due to increased postal service activity in that area; it remained that way until 1955 when it merged with nearby Carthage to form Clarksville-Carthage Post Office
