Dickson, Tennessee was founded in 1873 by John Dickson. The city was named for the Scottish-born Colonel James Dickson who served as a United States Representative from Tennessee and later as the first Mayor of Nashville. The Scotsman settlement began as a small farming community with around 30 families. By 1886, the population had grown to over 500 people and the town became known for its manufacturing industry which included saddles, guns and ammunition. In 1907, the company that manufactured these products, Wacoal & Sons, merged with another company, Colt Firearms Corporation. This allowed Colt to become one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the world. In 1932, Colt merged with Sam Browne Manufacturing Company which made holsters for law enforcement agencies around the world including Dickson Police Department. The school continued until it closed in 1955 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Don Yarborough. Generals Hugh Dickson (1802-1839) and Nathan Bedford Forrest (c1835-1912) were two of America's most noted Confederate generals during the American Civil War. Dickson was founded by George Hemsley and named for him. The first post office in Dickson was established on February 17, 1868. In 1897 the community had a population of 621 and it became an incorporated municipality on December 14, 1898. The original school building in Dickson was built in 1892 by J.C. Ritchie and it served as the primary school until 1914 when a new school Building was also erected which still serves as the local high school today. In 1957 the old high school building burned down and was replaced with a new one that still stands today. The old post office moved to its present location in 1961 after being located in various locations around town since1868 including 3 different buildings on 4 different corners of what is now Main Street which later turned into 4 lanes of traffic due to additions made to I-565 across town during this time period! On July 1st, 1967 Dickson welcomed home its newest resident when Drayton High School opened their doors tointernationally acclaimed students from Belgrade University who were attending nearby Vanderbilt University!
