The town was founded by Andrew Jackson Davis in 1834 as an agricultural community on high ground east of present-day Dickson City. In 1851, it had a school and one store. The first post office was established in 1852, and its name was changed to Dickson in 1865. In 1870, a sawmill and gristmill were built along with two stores and three churches. The population increased to 2,500 by 1910 when an oil well was drilled near present-day Dickson City and production began (the first oil well drilled in Hardin County). At that time, many residents worked for companies drilling oil wells such as Standard Oil Company (now ExxonMobil) or Gulf Refining Company In 1925–1926, construction began on what would become known as "The General" hotel which would serve as the nucleus of what is now known as Downtown Dickson. Work stopped during World War II because of military activity around nearby Memphis but resumed soon afterward Downtown Dickson incorporated on December 15th 1959 On July 3rd 1980 Hurricane Tip destroyed much of downtown including most of the businesses that once thrived there including The General Hotel which had been operational for over 60 years prior to this date A new downtown development project called Morningside Center has since started up within walking distance from everything old & new downtown

It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area and is the county seat of Lawrence County. The first settler in Dickson was James Fenton in 1816. In 1820, Samuel Griggs bought land east of present-day Dickson and built a log cabin which served as the nucleus for what would become the town. A post office called Dickson was established in 1825, and by 1830 it had developed into a small village with a single store and two homes. By 1840, Dickson had ten residents and three schools were operating. In 1868, John Prentice founded the Knoxville & Chattanooga Railroad which passed through Dickson on its way to Knoxville. This railroad brought more people to live in this small community and helped it grow into a full-fledged town by 1870. The onslaught of railroads during the late 19th century caused many businesses to fold due to competition from larger towns with more resources. However, thanks to investment from local boosters such as J W Ogden ( mayor of Knoxville from 1893 until his death in 1904), Dickson bounced back and continued to grow throughout the 20th century; by 2000 its population had reached 3,000 people. During World War II, many factories that manufactured goods for America's war effort were located in central Tennessee near Nashville; however, because production became concentrated around Chattanooga rather than tiny Dickson, most residents there did not see combat or experience firsthand how their hometown swelled with industry during wartime growth spurt – something that is particularly visible today when looking at aerial images of downtown Chattanooga taken between 1945-1949 (during what was known as "the good years"). However even though many people didn't experience life during wartime growth spurts like those seen around Nashville due to distance or lack thereof – thanks largely to advances within technology that made video cameras available everywhere – they are still responsible for helping make significant contributions both physically and emotionally to what exists now inside Downtown Chattanooga’s Financial District including several large banks which have been there since before World War II while also continuing cultural attractions like Artspace (a performing arts center) which opened in 1972 adjacent to one of city’s first light pole restaurants… And all without ever leaving their doorstep!
Dickson was founded in 1811 as a small settlement on the Cumberland River. The town grew rapidly and by 1836 it had a population of 1,500 residents. It became an important commercial center during the early years of the American Civil War, and Dickson was one of the few towns to remain operational after Confederate forces burned all but two weeks of its town in April 1861. Dickson also served as the capital of Tennessee from 1865 to 1867. In 1870, Dickson became a county seat and remained so until 1954.
