The name of the town may be derived from General James Dickson who fought in the American Revolution and was a leader of the mountain men. The first permanent settler in what is now Dickson was John Blair, who arrived in 1796. In 1819, Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, James Robertson (1777-1855), moved to Dickson from Huntsville and built himself a home on Main Street. He also helped found Presbyterian Church there in 1827. Dickson became an important trading post on the Cumberland River during the early 1800s because it was located near two saltpits – one at present day Kingston and another at Georgetown – where Indian traders traded goods with settlers and travelers. In 1824, John Sowers settled in what is now Dickson after traveling downriver for many years as an trader for his family’s cattle business. In 1867, General A.P. Hill ordered Colonel Jornall Grant to take command of his cavalry division stationed at Corinth while he visited Knoxville to campaign against Confederate forces under Robert Ewell that were attacking that city; Grant chose instead to stay behind and fight beside Ulysses S., Grant's older brother-in-law; this action ultimately led to Hill's retirement from military service after only three months' duty when he discovered that Ewell had escaped southward undetected and had taken up arms against him throughout their short engagement). A settlement by Methodist Episcopalians called Girard grew up around this time; however, it burned down about 1830 due to lack of attention from local farmers or loggers until it was rebuilt by Elijah White about 1840 atop some abandoned farmhouses which he named "Girard Farm." This community continued until about 1870 when all private property within a mile of Girard ceased operation because mountainous terrain intervened between Girard Creek and surrounding farming land creating too much resistance for stock rustlers or other criminals seeking easy access to valuable resources without fear of retribution from landowners/farmers).
