The town was first settled in 1825 by James Dickson and family. The name "Dickson" comes from a creek that flows through the community. In 1891, Dickson had two stores and one blacksmith shop. In 1930, the post office was renamed Dickson after J.B. Dickson, who served as mayor from 1927 to 1931 and 1932 to 1936. Dickson has a history dating back to 1825 when James Dickson founded the community on what is now Highway 12 east of Chattanooga along the Flint River valley near present-day Johnson City. At that time there were no roads in this area and settlers relied upon horseback travel for transportation! In 1830, Mr. & Mrs Jane Green purchased 10 acres of land south of present day town limits which they donated to the county Agricultural Society for use as a school farm including orchards and orchard seed trees! This helped initiate what would become our current elementary/middle school campus location! Over time we’ve added other educational institutions such aslibrary (1965),water treatment plant (2006),and high school (2015).

Today, it remains one of the most vibrant towns inTennessee and is home to many businesses and cultural attractions including an opera company and two professional sports teams - the Nashville Predators NHL ice hockey team and the Memphis Grizzlies NBA basketball team.
