Dickson is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Dickson is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The two main businesses in Dickson are Jacksboro Furniture and The Lumber Store. The community was founded by John Dickson in 1853 as a station on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad. In 1881, he donated land to form the town of Dickson which included present day parts of Hardin and Chilton counties. A post office was established in 1883 and remained in operation until it closed in 1990. In 1907, J C McGuire opened the first gas station west of Nashville on Main Street in what is now Jacksboro Furniture. From this store, McGuire started selling eggs and other farm products door-to-door throughout Davidson County until his death in 1944. His son-in-law, Harry Hines continued the business until 1979 when it became an independent grocery store chain that still operates today with headquarters located at 200 East Market Street in downtown Dickson (just across from the old schoolhouse). Dickson was a small town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States until the mid-19th century. It is now part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Dickson was John A. Dickson, who arrived in 1817. He and his family founded a log cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. The cabin may have been located near present-day Hurt Road and Old Hickory Boulevard. Dickson's early days were not easy; it was one of several locations around this region where Native Americans had control of large tracts of land. However, Dickson's pioneers did manage to establish themselves as farmers and ranchers; their crops helped support the community for many years. In 1853, when Sevier County was formed from parts of Davidson and Knox counties, Dickson became its seat. In 1875, three men – James Hoggatt, Cephus Gentry and Wm Soddy – organized a local cotton gin which became known as "The Cotton Gin Company." This company turned out to be one of Dickson's most important economic institutions; it manufactured cotton goods for local consumers and exported them to other regions throughout Tennessee and Georgia. During World War I (1914-18), much effort was made by the town to contribute manpower to the war effort; however, only a few residents enlisted in service because they could not afford to do so. After the war ended, many people chose to stay in Dickson rather than move away because they found life there more comfortable than elsewhere in Sevier County. In 1926, when Sevier County underwent an annexation by Chattanooga – making it fully within city boundaries – much progress had already been made in developing the town into a handsomely preserved center stage during intercity growth hereabouts: electric lights were installed at Main Street intersections (the first such installations anywhere in Southeast Tennessee), brick sidewalks were laid down downtown (a rarity at that time), new businesses opened up including two banks (one Japanese Americanowned), parks were developed including Whitehurst Park (later renamed Donelson Park after Laddie Donelson Sr.), school buses began running through central streets (!), gasoline stations appeared along rural roadsides (fueled by collection from motorists going into cities) etcetera etcetera... All told, things changed dramatically since 1926 - witness today's vibrant commercial district centered around First Avenue/Donelson Park with its high concentration of retail stores/cafes/bars/restaurants all concentrated near one central square!
