Dickson is a small town in Johnson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It was named after General David Dickson, who fought against the Mexican-American War. The first settlers in Dickson were from Kentucky and were led by Colonel John Rhea and his wife Captn Sarah June Rhea. On October 5, 1819, a delegation of thirty pioneers from Kentucky to meet with General David Dickson at Fort Donelson in order to request land for their state arrived in Dickson on horseback and rode into town on October 10th. They had come overland from Lexington via Nashville. In 1865, Mr. Ladd of Greeneville donated an acre of land northeast of town to establish a town square which became the nucleus around which the current downtown development took place. In 1881 Jno Capps organized a Methodist church in what is now the south end of town and laid out lots for churches on Main Street between Third Avenue (now Schoolhouse Road) and Fourth Avenue (now US 71). His daughter Mrs. Gertrude Capps donated her father's mausoleum adjacent to the old Methodist church building on Cemetery Lane east of town for use as a public school ground where students could play during winter days before attending school north of city limits in 1914-15 when government schools opened there because mainstreet was too wide for carts to travel safely; this structure still remains today as Mockingbird Elementary School across Frome Drive from Hanging Rock Golf Club & Spa samplings taken inside). According to one source: "The original name given to this locality was Brushy Bottom but soon it came to be known as Dickson after General David Dixon who while being carried off prisoner at Mexico City made an unsuccessful attack upon that capital." A post office called "Dickson" was established at this location on December 13th, 1864; it served until April 30th, 1870 when it changed its address to "Nashville". The first settler hereabouts is said to have been James Aiken who built his cabin about 1796 AD according as he left two acres along present day Second Avenue just west of where First Avenue meets US 71 near what is now Old Hickory Mall #2 . He also left behind three logsjambs or boards nailed together forming part of his cabin that can still be seen today lying flat against the trunk of a large live oak outside Nashvillens' Female High School located just south east corner Of 2nd Ave., smack dab between Nashvillens Presbyterian Church - Built 1886 - & Nashvillens Country Store – Built 1868 ; these structures are currently used by 4-H Barns Incorporated as classroom/warerooms/office space inside Hanging Rock Golf Club & Spa Samplings taken inside)
