A store and general merchandise business were started by Wm Hagerty in 1879 and continued until his death in 1951. After Hagerty's death, his son Wm J. Hagerty ran the store until his death also in 1951. In 1907 an oil well was drilled near present day Dickson and production began soon afterwards with imports from Texas Company bringing oil to market for export to Japan etcetera Three years later (1909), a small engine plant was begun by S C & O Railroad Company located on Main StreetEast side of town center In 1911 an elevator company called "Elevator Works"was organized with Elisha Carpenter as president This company supplied elevators for churches and other places throughout Jackson County The first schoolhouse (named "Abingdon")was built about 1908 near present day Depot Road Northeast corner of town .Mrs Fannie Boddy taught there during 1909-1920s #1 Mrs Florence Woodard from 1922 thru 1946

It developed as a cotton mill town and also became an agricultural center during the early 20th century. Dickson is now a bedroom community for the Nashville metropolitan area. James Dickson was born in 1792 in what is now Scotland to parents who immigrated to America on the ship "Enderbury". He worked his way up through the ranks of frontier government officials and merchants before becoming a landowner and livestock trader near Knoxville in 1824. When war broke out between America and Mexico, Dickson decided to take sides and sided with America. He served as captain of local militia forces and helpedraid Mexican settlements around Knoxville until he joined General Andrew Jackson's army at the Battle of San Jacinto in1835. After that victory, General Jackson appointed him justice of peace for Knox County. In 1840, he married Anna Maria Blount, daughter of Vice President John Centry Jr., making him one of Reconstruction’s first successful African American politicians. Although most residents today call themselves “Knoxvillians” or “Dicksonites,” there are still many historical aspects that make this small town special: its strong sense of community identity; its association with general education; its close-knit relationship with surrounding communities; its link to important events such as the Battle of Chickamauga; and even some components that date back more than two centuries (the nameplate on the courthouse). In addition to its ties to history, Dickson has continued to thrive since it emerged as a bedroom community for Nashville in 1984 after years of growth within central Tennessee’s Morehead City region –evinced by both property values increase and quality-of-life improvements throughout much of downtown Nashville over that time period (including new housing developments built directly adjacent to old cotton fields). Today, Dickson remains an important economic driver withinKnoxville – particularly through manufacturing production outside city limits – while also enjoying increasing international attention due to mild winters hereabouts which have drawn thousands of visitors each year over recent decades (eclipsing even summer tourist attractions like Shinola Valley).
