Crossville is a town in Hawkins County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,499 at the 2010 census. The name "Crossville" comes from the fact that it is located on the crossroads of two roads which were once important trade routes between Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1819, John Wilkinson built a cabin on what is now known as Meadow Road in Crossville. It was here that he started to sell chickens and other farm animals. By 1827, Wilkinson had erected a log cabin with four rooms and a kitchen on his property which served as the first post office in Hawkins County. In 1831, he sold his land to James Pugh for $1,500. Pugh donated the building used today by Crossville Elementary School to the town in 1835. The railroad arrived in Crossville in 1869 and soon after began providing transportation for goods and people between Memphis and Chattanooga. This led to an increase in business for local businesses such as Jardine's Dry Goods Store which became one of the most well-known stores in Tennessee until it closed its doors in 1941. Today, you can still see remnants of this store from when it was located at 4129 Old Hickory Rd., just east of Interstate 40 exit 9A (exit 12). One of the primary reasons why Crossville prospered during its early years was because there was never any lack of available water resources or proper drainage systems thanks to rainfall patterns throughout much of central Tennessee which allowed farmers to grow crops year-round without fear of flooding caused by heavy rains or thunderstorms later on during summer months. As time passed however things changed; infrastructure began deteriorating due primarily to budget cuts made by both city governments across Tennessee as a whole and Hawkins County specifically; this ultimately lead to increased traffic congestion along Withrow Road resulting not only from residents traveling into downtown Knoxville for business but also visitors coming through CrossVILLE looking for attractions like Knob Hill Natural Gas Park & amphitheater while staying overnight within driving distance! All these factors combined resulted in what could be considered an ever- burgeoning commercial district outside of downtown Knoxville called "The Ghetto". To make matters worse development continued unabated along Withrow Road leading eventually down into what is now known as Rabbit Ear Lane where businesses came clustering together around large churches catering mostly towards itinerant groups who would come through town every few weeks before descending back out again ten miles away back into their original rural surroundings (the reason being that no one wanted their landlord’s space cluttered up with tourist traps). Despite all these challenges thoughCrossVILLE persevered through technological advancements like paved streets (replacing muddy paths) gleaming new schools built specifically for students living near major highways (a rarity at that time), rapid population growth due largely to Military Base construction projects (notwithstanding efforts by elected officials), annexation by neighboring counties including Trimble County (~2000% growth rate) - all while maintaining its unique characterosty including its old abandoned houses nearly always converted into housing units called "Houses Across The Street."

Crossville is a city in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Cumberland River and is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. It was founded by Methodists in 1836. Crossville was originally named "Winthrop." The town site was chosen because of its location on the river bank which made it convenient for shipping goods and for mills that used the water to produce flour and other products. In 1836, John Wesley Powell set out from Cincinnati with his party on an exploring Expedition that would eventually lead him to Lake Tahoe and then to Mount Rushmore National Monument. On July 4, 1836, crosswise from Carthage (now Chattanooga), Methodist clergyman James Ransom opened Winthrop's first store with six barrels of flour sales worth $2 cash to start what would become one of America's leading flour production towns In 1840, Winthrop became the county seat of Cooke County when it was created from portions of Knox County. The new county courthouse was built in central Crossville near where present-day Third Street crosses Treat Avenue. In 1861, when Knox County also became a state within Tennessee, Crossville became its county seat once again In 1876–77 during ReconstructionCrossville experienced more than its share of violence due to newly implemented Jim Crow Laws in Tennessee after the end of the American Civil War On May 2nd 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early crossed into Union Territory over Lookout Mountain and arrived at Prestonsburg opposite Johnson City After Early's attack on Ulysses S Grant's staff at Harrison Ford's house nearpresent day Easton (Ala.) on May 12th 1865 Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched southwest towards Prestonsburg followed by Federal forces under Major General Edwin Stanton arriving about noon both units encountered heavy resistance near present dayCrossville residents had been alerted by passing trains and began flooding into their homes without orders
Crossville is a city in and the county seat of Crossville County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,587 as of the 2010 census. The crossroads town was founded on November 3, 1821 by John Stephenson as a post office named for his father-in-law Colonel James Stevenson. In 1830, Stephenson's son Daniel built a log cabin on what is now the corner of Main and Spring Streets in Crossville. This first building served as a inn until 1832 when it burned down. Daniel Stephenson rebuilt it and opened it as the first school in Crossville which he did so with his own money. In 1839, he also founded the first cotton gin in America in Crossville. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period with increasing production of cotton and other crops; however, during this time there were also several incidents that led to tension between locals and settlers: an attempted robbery by two men known as "the Texans" on September 5, 1841 resulted in two injuries; when three men rode into town while wearing white cockades to celebrate Confederate victory at Battle of Bull Run on April 12th 1865 they were stopped at gunpoint by local residents who took them into custody; after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, some residents looted government property before returning home without taking any valuable items Back then only slaves could be bought from state-owned stores but soon free people began to purchase them too In 1870s work started on building a railroad through Crossvilleconnecting Chattanooga with Nashville via Knoxville In 1880s local citizens raised enough money to invest in new waterworks that would provide drinking water for all citizens By 1910 population had grown to 10,000 In 1920s main street was renamed "National Avenue" after President Calvin Coolidge
