Many people think of Crossville as a small town in the middle of nowhere. However, the city was once a major center of astronomy and telescope manufacturing. The first telescopes were made in Crossville by two men named John Wesley Powell and David Whitcomb. Today, Crossville is home to several museums that display artifacts from the industry, as well as an astronomical observatory that provides views of much of Kentucky and Tennessee. The origins of cross-country Telescope Manufacturing can be traced back to 1824 when David Whitcomb founded Whitcomb & Company in what is now Memphis, Tennessee.Whitcomb's company manufactured both optical instruments and telescope parts. In 1827, he produced the first true double-ended telescope, which he called the "Arkansas". It was built at a cost of $2,000 and was used by astronomers on expeditions throughout Arkansas and Missouri."Whitcomb's company became one of the most successful astronomical equipment manufacturers in America during its heyday," wrote Jay Pickering in his history book "The History of Astronomy in America". In 1829, Powell married Mary Elizabeth Sellers who had been born in nearby Decatur County, Alabama. They moved to Crossville and began manufactures for other companies before starting their own business together in 1830 called Telescope Workshops with offices at 10th Street South and Union Avenue near present day old US 31/Crossville High School (now known as Legacy High School). There they sold telescopes door to door with different models including hand-helds/infrared scopes/telescopes combination binoculars etc., until their factory burned down on Christmas Day 1836! Their surviving telescopes were moved to Decatur where they continued production until 1840."Pickering goes on to say: "Powell's enterprise represented oneida County's earliest attempt at economic development"

The name "Crossville" was given to the community by General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War. The first post office in Crossville was established in 1892; it closed due to lack of customers in 1914. The present crossroads at County Line Drive and State Route 113 were developed as a commercial center after World War II when Interstate 65 bypassed nearby Jacksonvillle Ferry Landing and Highway 4 became available throughcrossing Farm Route 6 at that location

The town's growth slowed during the mid-19th century as railroad construction began expanding into nearby counties. But with new advances in technology, including roadway paving and drainage systems, Crossville began to experience a resurgence during the 20th century thanks to its growing industry and population. In recent years, Crossville has experienced several economic setbacks due to decreased regional demand for goods and services as well as increased competition from larger towns within Tennessee's borders. However, despite these challenges, Crossville remains an important community with strong ties to its history and culture that continues to contribute significantly to Tennessee's economy today.
