The community grew rapidly during World War II due to its location near Fort Benning and its ability to produce food for military personnel stationed there and for local farmers who produced fruits and vegetables for soldiers and civilians alike. As manufacturing began moving out of Cumberland County towards Chattanooga in the early 1960s,Crossville saw an increase in development along I-24 which bypassed it until it closed just south of town in 2016 due to infrastructure issues with traffic congestion caused by heavy highway traffic L&N Railroad construction nearby
