Crossville, Tennessee was once a bustling shipping and manufacturing town that thrived on the trade Routes of the Cumberland River. The area now known as Crossville was first settled by farmers in the early 1800s. One of the most important businesses in Crossville during this time was the Burke & Swenson Merchant’s Exchange. This business served as a hub for commerce and transportation in the area. In 1892, Crossville incorporated as a city and quickly became an important center for industry and commerce. The city’s dominant industries at this time included printing, leatherworking, shipbuilding, agricultural production, and tourism. The city also played an important role in helping to create the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). TVA was formed to help develop resources within Arkansas and Kentucky so that they could be used more efficiently for electricity production. As Crossville grew into one of America’s leading cities, it began to become popular with shooters who wanted to avoid weaponry ordinances that were common at other towns in similar locations. During World War II, Crossville became well-known for its manufacture of gun ear plugs. At this time, many people in America were interested in purchasing firearms because of fears around nuclear warfare. To make sure American citizens were able to purchase these ear plugs without fear of being arrested or fined, cross-town brothers John Burke and Job Swenson founded their own company called “Earplug Corporation” which produced these ear plugs until 1961. Firearm ear plugs generally don't have this feature though; instead, they just use some kind of microphone system to pick up incoming sounds from around your surroundings and send them directly into your headphone canal. This is better because it means that anyone listening to your gunshot noises will be able to hear everything (minus whatever noise You may be trying to drown out). However, it does mean that people nearby might not get as good of an experience as someone who has an amplifier put into their headphone specifically for firearms use.
