Crossville is a small town in the Williamson County, Tennessee Valley region of the United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The community was founded by George Ritchie in 1836 as a plantation on a lake near present-day Crossville. After years of development and growth, Crossville became an incorporated town in 1907. The population reached 8,000 by 1960 and 10,000 by 1990. In 2000, it had shrunk to 6,994 residents as cotton farming declined in importance and cross county commuting increased. However, since then there has been steady growth with new housing developments built along Interstate 45 and other major roads throughout the community. Today's economy is based on agriculture (mainly soybeans) while some businesses are involved in manufacturing such as fabricated metal products and electrical equipment;Crossville ISD offers vocational education opportunities for local youth through its programs called " Pathways to Prosperity." The history of Crossville goes back to 1836 when George Ritchie settled his family on a farm near present day Crossville after purchasing land from James Robertson for £10 per acre ($2 today). The first stop for Ritchie's crops came from his father’s plantation just across the state line in Giles County which he purchased from John Sevier two years earlier for £13 per acre ($3 today). From here he started shipping produce all over eastern Tennessee including Kentucky where he sold his goods door-to-door to people living thereabouts (the equivalent of having a modern grocery store). 5 miles east of present day Crossville off US 41 was another early settler named David Coleman who arrived about 1790 AGE when General Andrew Jackson invaded Tennessee looking for settlers to help him expel Native Americans from what is now Williamson County! Coleman’s home still stands colonial style 3 story white frame house with 2 large rooms each side full 4 bedrooms & 2 full bathrooms inside on 1 large porch that opens out onto an outdoor kitchenThere were no mailboxes or streetlights so folks must have walked their produce up and down this road during those early days getting it to market! David Coleman & his descendants are buried at Spring Hill Cemetery located just outside Petersburg TN

Crossville was founded in 1814 by the brothers Amos and Jacob Cross. The family had come from Transylvania, and their first store was built on the current site of the Crossavia Shopping Center. By 1860, Crossville had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, Crossville became an incorporated municipality. The crossroads where Crossville now stands were originally called "the forks." The village developed around three churches: Trinity United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, and Congregationalist Church. These churches helped to provide religious services for the community during its early years. In 1863, a school was built at the present site of thecrossroad shopping center to serve the townspeople. After several years of operation, the school closed in 1869 because of lack of funds. However, another school was soon erected on this same location and served until 1922 when it burned down due to a lightning strike. In 1924, Crossville hosted its first annual cotton exposition which drew many visitors from all over Tennessee and Kentucky including President Calvin Coolidge who made an appearance at one of the exhibits. It is believed that Coolidge's visit helped increase trade between Tennessee and Kentucky. Another major event that took place in 1924 was when Mayor John Watkins (1863-1937) dedicated Second Baptist church as a memorial to his father-in-law Drayton Watkins who had been killed in World War I two years earlier while serving with distinction with Company K 9th Infantry Regiment 129th Division American Expeditionary Force at Ypres Belgium. In 1928, crossroads mall opened up along Interstate 65 which allowed for more convenient shopping for residents of nearby cities such as Knoxville and Chattanooga without having to leave your home or go outside to purchase goods! This also led to more businesses starting up within Crossville which contributed heavily to its growth throughout those years! In 1935 there were also construction projects initiated which included new streets/arteries/bridges etc., making life much easier for everyone in town! That year also saw the opening up of First Presbyterian Church which currently serves as our village hall! And finally in 1936 Second Baptist Church opened its doors after much fundraising by local citizens!!! All these events helped contribute greatly towards furthering economic development within our town!! Today we continue striving hard everyday just like our ancestors did so many centuries ago; working together hand-in-hand with our neighboring municipalities; striving towards common goals!!
