The cross-town rivalry between Crossville High School and Vanderbilt University began to intensify; beginning in the late 1940s, Vanderbilt had an annual football game against Crossville which would result in large crowds of spectators lining the streets outside of both schools. As gun control laws continued to tighten at home and abroad, the popularity of firearms increased in America as well; by 1970, there were over 280 clubs nationwide that manufactured or distributed handguns.
Crossville is a small town in the state of Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is located in Putnam County. Crossville is part of the Memphis–Starkville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1875 and named for their cross on Main Street. The first post office was established in 1876, and the first school was built in 1881. The townsite was platted in 1892 and named for Judge Augustus Ewing Cross, who donated land to the town. In 1902, Crossville had a population of 104 people and a single store. In 1907, Crossville became an independent city with its own government and mayor; it annexed nearby Selma two years later. In 1912, Crossville hosted the Southeast Tennessee Cotton Fair which brought over 1 million visitors to its fairgrounds. The fairgrounds remain one of Crossville's most popular attractions today. In 1935, Crossville annexed neighboring Decatur; this annexation led to increased population growth as both municipalities combined to offer services such as social welfare programs and fire department response times that were much faster than those offered by individual municipalities within Putnam County. In 1957, when Putnam County became a consolidated county under new rules following the Tragedy of Hattie Jones*,Crossville lost its separate government as part of this change.* In 1984-85, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan*,crossvine organized a "motorcade" through downtown* which included police cars from various jurisdictions across central Tennessee*. Crossville is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2000 census. Crossville is part of the Memphis Micropolitan Statistical Area. The center of the community is called "The Square", and it has a post office, two churches, three schools (including one high school), and a few businesses. The first thing that most people know about Crossville is its history. Crossville was founded by Captain James Robertson in 1815 as a crossroads on the Cumberland River between Lebanon and Nashville. In 1836, Crossville became the seat of Knox County after it was organized from parts of Davidson and Madison counties. The town's name comes from nearby crosses on First National Bank property which were used to mark different routes for travelers coming into or going out of the area. In 1851, the town voted to become an independent county under the leadership of Judge John Jowers Sr.. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to Crossville after capturing that city during the Union Army's raid on Chattanooga). Forrest also built his own home in Crossville and named it Mount Pleasant. After Union forces recaptured Chattanooga in 1865, they burned all but Fort Pillow incrossingthe Tennessee River near present-day Tellico Plains before withdrawing acrossriver Crossville experienced heavy fighting during World War II when Nazi Germany occupied neighboring countries including France and Belgium; however little damage was done to either side due to lack of explosives available at that time After World War II ended there followed rapid growth with many new businesses being opened such as KFC (founded 1951), Pizza Hut (1957), Exxon Valdez oil spill cleanup company (1978-1981), Hooters restaurant (1987) etc., while existing businesses continued expanding such as American Express bank (1948-present) which merged with HSBCBank America Incorporated in 2002 Today Crossville still features strong agricultural roots with corn production accounting for almost half of all crop acreage produce here; however other industries have come and gone such as auto manufacturing which closed down around 1990 but has since been reborn as Ford Shelby Parts & Accessories dealership located just east off I-24 next door to Home Depot Incorporated (); this dealership reopened in late 2013 after over 25 years closed
