By 1830, the crossroads had become an important commercial center because of its location along the National Road and its access to easternolina oilfields. In 1830, John Witherspoon laid out a townsite on land that he purchased from James Tipton for $200 ($ in ). The name "Crossville" was chosen due to the fact that both Jesse Cross and John Witherspoon were from Scotland and had traveled through Scotland during their travels across America before settling hereabouts. Starter homes were built quickly in what would become Crossville as families came to purchase land or build themselves new homes near where they would live for the rest of their lives – often close to family members who already lived there! One local resident recalled: “We started building houses like crazy right away because we wanted our own place just like everybody else did back then!” The first Post Office opened on November 3, 1830 and served patrons of nearby Clarksburg until 1865 when it became known as Nashville Limits (later simply Nashvill).
