Crossville is a small community located in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. It is bordered by Lawrence County to the north, Knox County to the east, and Williamson County to the south. The population was 1,585 at the 2010 census. The town began as a small log settlement in 1827, and soon grew into a bustling German-speaking village. Crossville was originally named Neumannstadt after its founder, Johann Nepomuk Neumann. Today, all but one of Crossville's streets are named for local figures or citizens – Andrew Johnson (Alamo Street), Francis Marion (Gibraltar Street), James Kenedy (Camelback Street), and Leroy Swayne (Honeymoon Boulevard). Crossville developed close relationships with both Knoxville and Chattanooga – two of the largest cities in Tennessee at that time. In 1830, when John Crayton founded what would become known as Vanderbilt University in Chattanooga, he donated land for a college in Crossville. The first students arrived in 1831 and were enrolled in classes beginning on October 1st. The town quickly became established as an important node within Chattanooga's cultural sphere. In 1865, during the American Civil War, CrossVILLE served as Confederate headquarters for much of East Tennessee. General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his home here before moving later that year to Memphis to lead his forces against Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant. After Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, most of East Tennesse passed under Union control following the surrender of Robert E Lee. However, some elements within CrossVILLE continued to fight against Union efforts until 1865; these included members of the Highland Rifles Militia Regiment which fought onederland's side duringthe war years In 1924 construction began on what would become known as crossroads square – now called Main Street – which marks one end of this era of cooperation between Knoxvillenews outlets across from each other on three sides creating what has come to be known as crossroads square . In 1930s main street was widened from four feet wide widths up to six feet wide along center line making it lessRoute 26 had been part way thru town so new business area started near old post office
In the early 1800s, some inventors were trying to create a way for people to see clearly through solid objects. One of these inventors was Nicholas-Jacques Conte. He created a device called a conical mirror, which could be used to view things at a distance. This invention was very important because it allowed people to see what was behind solid objects much more clearly than they could before. Another inventor named Isaac Newton also developed an improved form of this mirror, which he called a concave mirror. This device helped people see things at a much closer distance and made it possible for them to understand how things worked much better than they had before. In the late 1800s, other inventors were still working on different ways of using conical mirrors and concave mirrors to see things at a distance. But eventually, these inventions became common household items and remain in use today!

Crossville was founded in 1827 by John and Sarah Ann Cross. The original area that is now Crossville was a hunting ground for the Cherokee Indians. The first settler in what is now Crossville, John Atherton, came to the area in 1827. In 1829, the Athertons built the first town government in what is now Crossville. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson. In 1840, a post office was established at Crossville and it remained in operation until 1946. In 1865, Countess Magdalena Vanderbilt donated land to the city ofCrossville for public school purposes. The city of Crossville was incorporated on April 14, 1881. In 1907, crossroads were created at milepost 231st and 241st Streets Southeast and Milton Road became one of those intersections; it remains that way today. As time passed, more businesses started up in Crossville and growth continued to accelerate over time; however, there were also some challenges faced along the way such as World War I which had a significant impact on local economies throughout Tennessee. It wasn’t until 1935 when crossroads were again created at milepost 231st and 241st streets Southeast – this time naming them Commerce Street – that things really started to change forCrossville as a community! After years of hard work by many people within the community – including youth groups working together on projects like paving roads –crossroads finally became reality! With all of these changes happening throughout our history- it’s easy to forget just how much has been accomplished here over the past few hundred years! We are truly grateful for everything that has come before us both personally and collectively here at CrossVILLE!

After Reconstruction, Crossville experienced a growth period that included many new businesses and residences.
