This early effort helped awaken some of those Cherokee natives who had been enslaved by white fur traders for years. In 1865, when Tennessee became an Confederate state, Crossville quickly sided with her southern adversary. Many residents property and left for mostly northern Alabama or Mississippi during that year's warring stateshood process. However, many people did return to Crossville afterthe war ended – including some of its founding fathers and women such as Lydia Dieterhoff (1828-1914), whose work developing public health measures in the area made her one ofCrossville's most well-known citizens over time;and Alice Cooksey (1860-1959). During Reconstruction era (1865-1877), Crossville experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location between Nashville and Davidson City on the Cumberland River - two major Southern cities then richest in resources and development potential. Businesses such as banks, hotels and cotton plantations grew rapidly around what would become known as "The Crossing." Blacks also moved into this predominantly white town during this time period; however integration wasn't until much later when African Americans worked here openly side by side with White citizens starting in World War II. In 1907, local banker Fenton Bowen opened Bowen & Company store at 401 Main Street - one of only two black owned businesses then operating within miles of downtown Nashville – furthering integration efforts here during post-war reconstruction days which still lingered long into the 21st century even though blacks have since rejoined majority Caucasian communities nationwide today without any negative consequences.. In 1924 local school board member Lillie Hutton developed land east of downtown for a high school which opened its doors September 9th that same year under name “Anna Lyon High School” renamedafter Hutton herself in 1951 following outbreaksof violence against Black students linkedto Minneapolis’ Little Rock incident earlier that year . Most recently , CrossVILLE has seen substantial redevelopment with several million dollars invested throughout recent decades including: numerous mixed use projects such as Midtown Crossing commercial corridor sports arena lofts along Willmot Avenue retail district complete renovation/addition/maintenance/updates to nearly all exterior physical infrastructure including new sidewalks streetlights public address system annexation to city limits etc… resultingin increased population density totaling more than 10 times current population size while creating significant first generation opportunity plus countless job opportunities both locally & nationally
