The first settlers in what is now Crossville were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1802. They named their new settlement after John Wesley's birthplace, Crossford in England. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on the river and its access to transportation including steamboats that crossed the Cumberland River. In 1865, when Kentucky seceded from Tennessee, Crossville became part of Kentucky as well. In 1881, an act was passed by Congress which designated Williamson County as one of five counties within Tennessee to be included in a proposed black college system known as "The University ofTN." The white citizens of Williamson County wanted nothing to do with this new development so they successfully fought off any efforts by the university trustees to establish it here. Instead, they established their own school called Vanderbilt College which opened its doors in 1882. Today Vanderbilt College continues to serve as one ofCrossville's most important institutions with over 350 students enrolled each semester! In 1923, Crossville had its first professional football team when Samuel Funston fielded a punt against Henderson High School and won 20-6! The following year saw baseball become a popular sport with local teams playing against each other around town until prohibition ended all sports competition in Tennessee! In 1861, Crossville became the capital of Tellico County after its incorporation as a town. The crossroads which now comprise downtown Crossville were first settled in 1792 by traders from Glasgow, Scotland who called it "The Crossing." Today, Crossville is known for its Historic District which includes over 50 buildings dating back to the 1800s including several churches and homes of presidents such as Ulysses S. Grant and Andrew Johnson. The district also contains some impressive agricultural properties such as Hance's cotton plantation that still produces crops today.
