Gun lights were first introduced to Crossville in 1911 when the city council authorized the installation of a new type of streetlight called a "cannon light." The original cannon light was an aluminum or plastic object that hung from a pole and emitted a loud, high-pitched noise when activated. The sound was used to warn drivers of nearby cars of potential danger. The use of gun lights began to grow more popular in Crossville during the 1920s. Mayor J.B. Hardesty ordered the installation of 50 cannons lights throughout the city in an effort to increase safety for pedestrians and motorists alike. By 1930, gun lights had become standard on Crossville's streets. The popularity ofgun lights continued through the 1940s and 1950s, but gradually began to decline as stricter regulations began to come into place. In 1957, Crossville became one of only two cities in Tennessee (the other being Clarksdale) that banned all municipally owned streetlights with exception for emergency purposes. Gun lights remained illegal until 1978, when they were re-approved for use by the city government with some changes designed specifically for their usage on main thoroughfares such as Main Street and Second Street. After years of experimentation and debate, Crossville finally approved its first gun light system in 1983 - consisting of two 6-foot poles connected by a wired cable system - becoming oneofthe most advanced Municipal Light Systems in the country at that time! Today, gun lights continueto be used extensively throughout Crossville; both as traditional streetlights and as part of municipal lighting systems. By 1875, there were sixgun and shotgun muzzleloading pistols being manufactured in the town. The population of Crossville increased from 350 to 1,000 during the 19th century. Gunlights became more common after the Civil War as Union forces began using them for signaling.
Crossville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,496 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–BIRMINGHAM Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Main Street Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The first permanent settlers in what is now Crossville were farmers who arrived from Kentucky in 1811. They named their new community after William and Mary Cross, two brothers who had come overland from Virginia to become traders and missionaries for the Methodist Episcopal Church. By 1819, all of Hardin County had been organized into three townships: Crossville, Ewellsville, and Rossiville (later renamed Nixonsville). In 1827, residents of Ewellsville petitioned the General Assembly to create a fourth township – White Knox Township – but this request was rejected because it would have included crossroads at which fraudulent cattle sales could be conducted. In 1836, Josephine Perry founded the Perry cotton gin near where today's downtownCrossville stands. She started out by planting 200 acres (80 hectares) of cotton on her farmstead and dyeing it with indigo using bluebonnets as needed; within a few years she had expanded her operation to fields around what are now South High School and North High School. When economic conditions began deteriorating throughout much of Tennessee in 1840-41, Perry stopped cultivating cotton and began weaving baskets instead; these products became known as "Perry baskets." In 1847–48 Cherokee Indian trader James Fenton visited Crossville for several months; upon his return he reported that there were no white people living anywhere near him except for some scattered families among the Cherokees living along the Cumberland River Valley east of Nashville. This report led to an abortive attempt by General Nicholas Hurlbut to establish a capital city for Native Americans east of Memphis called Fentonburg—an idea that was revived during Reconstruction but never fully realized because mostnative American merchants chose not to participate in this type of business venture outside their traditional areas of trade with European settlers). After statehood in 1861Crossville experienced rapid growth due largely to annexation by Chattanooga when that city became one of four Uniononies under Reelection President Andrew Johnson following its victory over Confederate forces at Fort Donelson on April 6,. 1865 In 1870 alone CrossVILLE businesses generated an annual income exceeding $50 thousand dollars! In 1907, Crossville adopted an ordinance establishing it as a municipality with self-government within its limits. In 1954, however, when Hardin County merged into Davidson County, Crossville reverted back to its previous status as a unincorporated community within Hardin County without any formal government involvement or control over its own affairs until recent times when ordinances have been passed and enforcement done through local representatives elected by residents of crossvillenation
The town of Crossville was founded in 1865 by General James Robertson and his wife, Anna. The town was named for Anna's father, John Cross, who had moved to the area from Kentucky. The first store in the town was opened by Mrs. Robertson and her husband. In 1887, a post office was established in Crossville and remained in operation until 1951. In 1930, the town elected its first mayor, J.C. Barnes.
