Crossville is a small town in Middle Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Crossville has a history dating back to 1819 when it was called Fort Stephenson. The first settler in Crossville, Andrew Rankin, arrived in 1819 and named it after his home village of Stephenson in Scotland. Rankin had been sent by General James K. Polk to survey land for a military post on the Cumberland River near present-day Chattanooga. He found good land there and set about building a house and store on what would eventually become known as Main Street. In 1828, Rankin's store burned down, but he rebuilt it and opened another store two years later on Third Avenue just east of today's courthouse square. In 1830, John Witherspoon built a log cabin near the center of Crossville on what became Fourth Street - now known as Witherspoon Road - for his wife Hannah Waters Fenton (1801-75). Mrs. Fenton was one of the original settlers in this small community and is buried at Arlington Cemetery next to her husband John Witherspoon Sr.. In 1835, she married Prentice Drake Moulds (a native of Tennessee) and they moved into their own home on Seventh Street west of downtown Crossville before moving to their current location on First Avenue south of downtown in 1865 when their daughter Altice Moulds Drake became Mrs..
