Crossville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The name " Crossville" comes from the Welsh word for crossroads or crossing place. The community was founded in 1868 by Methodist missionaries and settlers from Wales who were driven out of their homes by war with England. The first post office in Crossville was established on December 12, 1868, and was called Greshamsboro. On October 15, 1870, the post office changed its name to Crossville because of the growing crossroads location it became known for. In 1875, a store and restaurant opened in Crossville which continued to serve as a commercial center until 1945 when it closed due to World War II shortages of food stamps and other essential items. In 1925, construction began on what would become one of the most famous bridges in Tennessee – the Gresham Bridge over Mud River which connects Crossville with Johnson City. The $2 million project took three years to complete and opened on November 16, 1927. Today, the bridge is an important link between Crossville and Johnson City providing transportation needs for both communities as well as scenic views across Mud River Canyon north of Knoxvill
