Cookeville was founded on December 10, 1807 byGeneral James Wilkinson as part of a larger military expedition against the Cherokee Nation. The town was named after Captain John Cooke who had fought with Wilkinson during the Battle of Tullahoma Ridge on October 17, 1806. At first, little attention was paid to Cookeville; however, it grew quickly due to its strategic location and easy access to resources such as timber and water. In 1861, Confederate forces besieged Union forces at Fort Donelson in Chattanooga before withdrawing capture attempt after capture attempt failed until Union General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived with his army and relieved them two days later. From 1863-1865, Cookeville served as the capital of both Confederate Tennessee and Union Kentucky before becoming Nashville following that state’s secession from the United States in 1861. After Nashville’s incorporation into the Confederacy as an independent state, many businesses closed down or relocated within Nashville while Cookeville continued to prosper due to its proximity to food production centers like Jackson TN (just east of Nashville) and Louisville KY (just west of Knox County). However, because most people living in East Tennessee lived outside Of Antioch or Knox County limits at this time there wasn’t much development taking place within these boundaries which contributed greatly to lackadaisical attitude towards downtown Cookeville over time This situation changed uponbrainstorming sessions between Mayor Clifton Bowen Jr., Commissioner Willard Bickerton & developers Harry Hodge & Sons beginning around 1970 which led directly to Downtown revitalization movements now underway When I last visited downtown back then it looked pretty tired but I believe things have definitely taken off since then Between 1972-1975 a group called “Status quo Coalition” spearheaded efforts for redevelopment including plans for a high school/community center/library complex along SR 620 across from City Hall; however this project never got beyond concept stage A professional Developer team led by Tom Pritchett came onboard full steam ahead starting work on what would become one of largest municipal redevelopment projects ever completed when they purchased land adjacent to First Baptist Church – reconfiguring it into One Metropolitan Square today! This project ultimately succeeded resulting in an increase in population from 1K-2K per year through 2000 alone! In short: Downtown properties were rezoned & redeveloped thru collaboration between government officials (& private business owners) utilizing creative ideas & initiatives rather than simply giving away tax breaks etc.—a model that has successfully replicated itself throughout much Texas Cities!

The town's original name was "New Cumberland," but it reverted to its current name in 1864 when it became part of the newly created County of Ross. After the war, many people left Cookeville for jobs in larger towns throughout Middle Tennessee because of postwar competition for jobs caused by new interstate highways being built.
