The community rapidly developed due to its location on the banks of a river that offered easy transportation and ample water supplies for agriculture. Many plantations were established here during Reconstruction; these included Beechwood Plantation, Overholt Plantation, Harper's Ferry Plantation, Whiteside Plantation (now part of Knoxvillle), and Morehead Station (now part of Chattanooga). During this time period many African Americans worked on these plantations; they are often remembered for their hard labor but also for their contributions to society overall. Cookeville is a town in Cooke County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Area. The first settler in Cookeville was John Pritchard, who arrived in 1797. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. Pritchard became a successful trader and rancher in Cookeville before dying in 1825. His son-in-law James Overton opened a mercantile store and post office in 1827 that became known as "the Old Store." In 1838, John Neely founded Neely's Mill which processed cottonseed into yarn and cloth until it closed in 1865. The mill foundations remain extant today as part of the park located at the corner of Main Street and Third Avenue in Cookeville. In 1880, Jeptha Hargrave established "Hargrave's General Store" on Broad Street near present day University Drive (later called State Route 68). The store prospered for many years until it burned down during an arson attack in 1907. Held by descendants since then, Hargrave's General Store has been restored to its original condition with interior walls still remaining from when it operated originally. In 1926, Andrew Mellon donated $10,000 to help finance construction of what is now Vanderbilt University’s East Campus; this donation remains one of history’s earliest gifts to Vanderbilt University.– Anna Sewell Peck
