Grant; he named the community "Braggsboro" in honor of himself and his commander-in-chief (General Patton). This caused a lot of tension between the United States and Mexico because the Cherokees were considered part of Mexican territory. After Jackson's victory in the Battle of New Orleans, he decided that the Cherokees should be moved back to their original land. As a result, on February 17, 1815, General James Kenedy marched into Cookeville with 2,500 troops to remove the Cherokees. The town was burned down and all its people were killed or captured. The Creek Indians who lived near Cookeville also became enemies of Ulysses S. Grant during Reconstruction after he took office as President of America in 1865. However, most residents of Cookeville continued to live there until 1880 when it was annexed by Nashville proper. Today, much evidence remains from early Cookeville such as old homes and churches which are open for tours every day except Monday when they are closed due to National Park Service regulations.
