Cookeville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 10,562 at the 2010 census. Cookeville was founded in 1837 by John Cooke and his wife Abigail. It is named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War. The first post office in Cookeville was established on November 5, 1837. The first store opened in 1840. By 1850, there were six businesses in Cookeville with a population of over 100 people. In 1860, the population had grown to 12 residents and two stores. A school opened in 1865 and remained open until it merged with nearby Marshall High School in 1955. In 1865, the Union Army attacked Confederate forces near Cookeville while they were retreating from Chattanooga after being driven out of that city following the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Some of General Ambrose Burnside's troops pursued General Ransom's army into Cookeville where they engaged Confederate forces for several hours before withdrawing back to Chattanooga without any loss to their own side or casualties on either side (although one man was killed). This event is also considered to be First Battle of Chattanooga which ended up paving the way for Union advances across Georgia during Sherman's march through that state later that year. A major employer in early days of Cookeville was fishing as many men worked along riverbanks catching catfish, sardines and other fish then shipping them downriver to Nashville where they were sold by local merchants.(Fisheries Gazette article) The original plank roadbed around present day downtown included sandbags because no water could be found deep enough to putrero boat floats on top- an arrangement still used today whenKayaking or Boating on Big Creek below downtown.) Coal mining started soon afterwards but stopped due lack of ore found near present day town limits; however coal dust remains active as an artifact known locally as "Cookevilians" still working today at abandoned mine located just outside town limits) Coal yards are still visible today around center business district although most operations have moved away since early 2000’s including several large brick warehouses now housing numerous Sam’s Club stores) Today much of rural Davidson County remains farmland with few if any industry remaining
