The town of Cookeville was platted in 1836 by John Witherspoon and named for Commodore Cornelius Vandal Coote (1768-1828). Catherine Sellars built an early cotton gin in 1849 which became one of the most important mills in America. It continued to operate until 1907 when it closed due to competition from larger mills. After years of decline, the mill reopened as an agricultural research center in 1978 and continues to do so today as part of Vanderbilt University’s Nashville campus. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell set up camp within two miles (3 km) of Cookeville for his cavalry raid into Knox County that same year. A Union brigade under Colonel John Hogg attacked this force early morning on September 1 and drove them back towards Chattanooga before nightfall; however, Ewell escaped unopposed and arrived at Chattanooga that evening without being detected. A smallpox pandemic began ravaging Tennessee Valley towns during 1863-64; however, no cases were reported within Cookeville until late October 1863 when five residents developed what they believed to be smallpox after touching their face while out hunting near Mount Juliette northeast of town; all five later died fromthe disease though only two individuals actually had actual contact with Smallpox virus! One account suggests that “a number”of people may have contracted smallpox during this time period but there is no evidence whatsoever to support this claim either epidemiological or medical authorities have ever been able to provide conclusive proof or documentary evidence supporting such a contention beyond circumstantial evidence alone
