Cookeville is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,221 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County and home to the Cookeville Air Force Base. Cookeville was founded in 1829 by Captain James Hogg and his wife Elizabeth Hogg. It became a town in 1839, after it was chosen as the county seat of Williamson County. In 1865, Cookeville was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant following his victory at Gettysburg over Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee. The Air Force Base located in Cookeville began operations on 1 October 1947 as Norton-Simmons Air Reserve Station No. 5; it was redesignated as Cookeville Air Force Base on 30 November 1959. On 15 July 1972, Northrop Grumman Corporation opened its first major research facility in southeastern Tennessee when it acquired land adjacent to Norton-Simmons AFB for $27 million to build their Technical Research Center (TRC). The complex eventually grew to include more than 200 buildings and employed 4,000 people during its peak years of activity from the early 1990s until its closure in 2006 due to budget cuts within Northrop Grumman Corporation. In 2005, Davidson College announced they would move from downtown Cookeville to a new campus established just east of town along I-24 and US 421 across from Fort Campbell Army base beginning with the 2008/2009 school year; this led to an increase in growth around the airport which has since been known as "The New Town". In December 2007, First Baptist Church announced they would relocate their worship center from downtown Cookeville to a new location just north of town off US 221 called "New Life" while also constructing a brand new church building onsite which will be used both for religious services and business meetings/conferences purposes starting with the 2009/2010 school year; this led to another increase in growth aroundthe airport which has since been known as "The Old Town".
